Review: Zydecosis – Zydeco All Night

Over the last few years, we’ve seen a number of bands playing what at first might have seemed “impossible” or in some cases “sacrilegious” versions of accepted classics.

So the thought of a zydeco-style WHOLE LOTTA LOVE, SATISFACTION and PARANOID could be enough to make most rock fans tear their remaining hair out. On the other side, however, we have a music industry that is desperately trying to wring money out of spectacular acts and back catalogues. So you end up at the conclusion that it wasn’t actually the music that was better for many people years ago, but that it’s all about the song, because well-written songs will both stand the test of time and adapt to different styles. And if you can’t add a new dimension to a song when you cover it, is there a lot of point in doing it?

A casual comment by a Kiss-loving drummer sowed the seed of what was to become the ZYDECO ALL NIGHT project, the debut CD by Houma, Louisiana-based group Zydecosis. The question before them was simple:

“What would bands like Led Zeppelin and The Who have sounded like if they had been using washboards and accordions?”

ZYDECO ALL NIGHT launches straight into WHOLE LOTTA LOVE as a kind of statement of what’s to be expected and while there’s a brief pause for breath with BABA O’RILEY in the middle, the tempo picks up again with Cheap Trick’s I WANT YOU TO WANT ME (complete with “Budokan-style” intro) and drives you along to the finale of FEEL LIKE MAKING LOVE, though if you were partying to this album, and that is highly recommended, you might find yourself unable to make it to the bar, let alone anything else.

Although the arrangements are no doubt a group effort, special mention should be made of the accordion riffs of Chubby Carrier and the spot-on vocals of Steve Junot, combining to give an authentic, passionate sound, without ever coming over as a mere caricature of the originals.

In short, this is a seriously good Zydeco album made by seriously good Zydeco musicians, so just enjoy it and let the good times roll!
